What is your message to the world regarding women in canoe?
Any who still have doubts about women’s canoe as a discipline better mentally prepare to have their minds blown. Every year that I have the opportunity to compete internationally I am shocked by how quickly the sport is developing in other countries. If this rate of development keeps up, in a couple years there will be a whole new group of girls hitting times that we never knew were possible.
Many of the guys on the Canadian Men’s Canoe Team, and other Canoers from my club, the Burloak Canoe Club.
What is your favorite music?
Lots of indie music: The Arcade Fire, Lykke Li, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
How many years do you see yourself competing in canoe?
I have already had a long, rewarding career in Sprint Canoeing. In the next year or so I will be starting my graduate studies in Conflict Mediation and I think that will be the point that I will stop competing- though I hope that I will always continue to paddle
Do you have a coach and/or a training group?
At the Burloak Canoe Club I train with fellow women’s canoer Taylor Potts, and my coaches are Larry Cain and Scott Oldershaw.
I used to coach the Elementary paddling group at Burlaok (ages 8-14) and have a good relationship with a lot of the young kids at our club because of that. At Burloak, Friday afternoon practice is usually “coach a kid day” which means everyone in the High Performance group is responsible for doing a one-on-one practice with a younger athlete. I always try and pick the young canoe girls- because they’re my favorites.
